The Woman in the Dunes
Vintage International · first published 1962 · 256 pages
An amateur insect collector misses the last bus from a seaside village and is given a bed at the bottom of a sand pit.
Tense and grainy, it renders sand, heat, and thirst so closely that the pages seem to dry out.
For a night when the air feels heavy.
About this book
A schoolteacher from Tokyo goes to the coast to hunt for a rare beetle and accepts lodging with a young widow whose house sits deep in the dunes. In the morning the rope ladder is gone. Each night the woman shovels away the sand that threatens to bury the house, and the village expects him to help. What stays is the question of what a life is for, worked out grain by grain in the rhythm of daily labor.
