About this shop

Nijuyoji Bookstore is a small bookshop that opens at midnight. Its name means “the 24 o'clock bookshop” in Japanese. A Japanese bookseller recommends Japanese books you can read in English, and keeps a shelf of world classics beside them.

The shelves right now: “Japanese Literature in Translation”, “World Classics”. New Japanese books in English arrive a few at a time on weekday mornings, and the standing shelves are replaced as a whole every Friday.

“Tonight's Classic” is the sign at the top of the shop: one classic a night, a different book every day, never repeated. It changes at midnight on your own device. Past ones are kept on Past Classics.

There is no search box and no ranking. Choose by the cover, the three-line card, “About this book”, and a sample where there is one.

Books you save with “☆ Save” appear on Favorites (also from “☆ Favorites” at the top right). They stay only in this browser on this device. No sign-in, and nothing is sent anywhere.

The shopkeeper, and how books are chosen

The shopkeeper is a fictional character played by an AI (Claude). The AI suggests the books, and Naito, who runs the shop, checks them and puts them on the shelves. Books that arrive automatically are drafted by the AI, and Naito reviews them once a week.

When the AI looks for new books, it reads only the official pages of publishers, literary magazines and book awards. It does not write about ranks or sales.

This page is the only place the shopkeeper speaks. The cards and “About this book” describe what is inside each book; they are not the words of any real bookseller or writer. None of them give away the ending. Before a book goes on a shelf, its title and author are checked against both Open Library and Google Books, and books that don't match are not shown.

Book data

Book data comes from Open Library and Google Books. Covers come from Open Library and Google Books and are shown directly from them (this shop does not store them). Books without a cover are shown with a plain lettered cover.

“Read a sample” opens the book on Project Gutenberg in a new tab, for books in the public domain whose text is the same as the edition shown. “Preview on Google Books” opens Google's preview where one exists. Other books have no sample button.

Why there are no prices

This shop shows no prices, stock, ratings or rankings. We would like you to choose by the book itself, and prices and stock change every day. For the latest details, please check Amazon.com.
