Heart of Darkness and The Congo Diary
Penguin Classics · first published 1899 · 192 pages
A sailor recalls a journey up an African river to find a company agent who has gone deep into the interior.
The tale is told aboard a boat on the Thames at dusk, and the voice circles and hesitates as if the memory resists being spoken.
For a night on dark, slow water.
About this book
Marlow, a seaman, tells his companions about the time he took command of a river steamer for a European trading company in Africa. Along the way he sees the waste and cruelty of the ivory trade and hears more and more about Kurtz, an agent with a remarkable reputation. The farther upriver he goes, the less certain anything seems. This edition also includes the diary Joseph Conrad kept on his own journey in the Congo in 1890.
